... And Bootlegs For All

Megadeth - Live in San Francisco, CA, USA, 1985

Venue: The Kabuki Theatre: San Francisco, CA, USA
 Date: May 31, 1985
 Time: 55:38
 Size: 1 CD

 Sound: AUD, B/B-
Notes: Transferred, Compiled, & Seeded By: Smores. Low-gen tape.
Kindly shared by Sim (SMores) in mid-2014, ie. almost 30 years after the show the tape surfaced! Sim's comments: "notes from Smores: several months ago I sent my copy of this show to SMBTapes to transfer from cassette, track and upload for me in an ongoing project to get some of my old collection "out there". He did a fine job, however it was from the posting of the show that I learned that even though the setlist written on the J-card appeared complete, the cassette itself was missing tracks. It seemed as if the person I got the show from 28 years ago(!) had used a 60 minute cassette to dub from a 90 minute tape, leaving my copy with the first 30 minutes of side A and the last 10 minutes of the show on side B (in essence 40 minutes of the 55 minute show). Well, it just so happens, after 28 years, that I am very much so still friends with the guy who I got the show from! He no longer trades or has much use for his cassettes, but I knew he never threw them out. I asked if there was any way he could locate HIS tape of this show and confirm if he had it on a 60 or 90 minute cassette. Well, he did me one better and listened to the tape and confirmed that he did indeed have the missing tracks on his tape! Last week I met up with him and got HIS cassette. I retransferred the show using my JVC tape deck into my Edirol R09. I used Adobe Audition to remove some of the tape hiss and normalized the file, retracked it in CD Waveditor, and saved it as a flac. I apologize for any inconvenience to those that downloaded the original posting, but if it wasn't for those people I wouldn't have seen the interest in these old Megadeth shows and I might not have made the effort to track this one down. This copy still has an incomplete Rattlehead and there is an unexplained glitch during Mustaine's solo. Lastly, the source here is still a cassette of unknown generation, but it is one generation less than the version that was posted by SMBTapes."
Original info when shared by SMBTapes: "I haven't been able to locate this show anywhere online or on anyone's trading list, including db.etree.org. According to Megadeth.com, the band performed in Reseda, CA twice in 1985, once on 1985-05-24 and then on 1985-09-19. During this show, Dave mentions playing in Reseda "last Friday". In 1985, May 24th was on a Friday, and September 19th was on a Thursday, which confirms this show as being May 31st performance. I can't find a precise release date for their first album, but this show took place either a little before its release or a little after, since some sources say it was released in May '85 and others say June '85. The recording isn't very good quality, and the recording levels lower during the last song.
Enormously thanks to Sim for finding the most complete source of the show! And as he put it this source sounds quite better than the originally posted one.
Another info about this gig was shared by Doug (deathangel) that this was actually Exodus "Bonded By Blood" Record Release show.
To me personally it's always fun to hear early Dave singing/talking. However this was unusual - before "Mechanix" Dave says: I would like to dedicate this next song to a man in the audience...Ever since seeing him play with Armored Saint @ the Palladium a few months ago [1985-03-10 - ed.], I've never had so much respect to this man in my life. This song is for you James. James Hetfield."
Once again i'm deeply grateful to Sim for sharing this tape with me and the rest of the world!
